Checked Baggage Allowance
Before we dive into the extra baggage fees, let’s first take a very brief look at Qatar Airways’ baggage allowance policy.
Checked Baggage Allowance for North America, South America, and Africa
If you are flying to or from North America, South America, or Africa, your baggage allowance is based on the piece concept. What this means is that your baggage allowance is defined by the number of bags that you can travel with:
Cabin Class | Number of Bags | Bag Size Limit | Bag Weight Limit |
---|---|---|---|
Economy | 2 | 62″ | 50 lb |
Business | 2 | 62″ | 70 lb |
First | 2 | 62″ | 70 lb |
Checked Baggage Allowance for the Rest of the World
If your flight is not to/from the Americas or Africa, your baggage allowance is based on the weight concept. Your baggage allowance is defined by a total weight limit, that you’re free to distribute across as many bags as you wish. However, the combined size allowance of your bags is limited to 118 linear inches.
Cabin Class | Type of Ticket | Size Limit Total | Weight Limit Total |
---|---|---|---|
Economy | Economy Classic | 118″ | 55 lb |
Economy | Economy Convenience | 118″ | 66 lb |
Economy | Economy Comfort | 118″ | 77 lb |
Business | Business Classic | 118″ | 88 lb |
Business | Business Comfort | 118″ | 88 lb |
Business | Business Elite | 118″ | 88 lb |
First | First Elite | 118″ | 110 lb |
Extra Baggage Fees for Flights to/from the U.S., Canada, Argentina, and Brazil
If you wish to travel with more checked bags than was included with your ticket, you are allowed to buy up to 5 extra checked bags.
Each extra bag can be up to 62 linear inches (158 centimeters) in size and weigh up to 50 pounds (23 kilograms). As you would expect, the fee is more expensive if you pay for your bags at airport check-in.
Paying for Extra Bag Fees Online
If you choose to pay for your extra bags before reaching the airport, you can buy them online, through Qatar Airways’ mobile app, or at a Qatar Airways office or airport counter.
The fee for each extra bag is $200 (Can$260).
However, there are a couple of exceptions:
- Flights between Qatar and Africa: $100 (QAR 370) for each extra bag
- Flights between Brazil and Buenos Aires: $80 for each extra bag
To take advantage of the prepaid fee, you must pay for your bags up to 6 hours before your flight’s scheduled departure.
Paying for Extra Bag Fees at the Airport
If you are paying for your extra checked bags at the airport, or within 6 hours of your flight’s scheduled departure, you will be charged $255 (Can$330) for each bag.
However, there are a couple of exceptions:
- Flights between Qatar and Africa: $130 (QAR 460) for each extra bag
- Flights between Brazil and Buenos Aires: $100 for each extra bag
Overweight Bag Fees
If you are traveling on an Economy Class ticket, and your bag weighs more than 50 pounds, you will be charged an overweight fee of $75 (Can$100). Checked bags weighing more than 70 pounds (32 kilograms) will not be accepted at check-in. Overweight bag fees have to be paid when checking in at the airport. They can’t be paid for earlier.
Extra Baggage Fees for Flights from the Rest of the World
If your flight is not from North America, South America, or Africa, your baggage allowance uses the weight concept. You are allocated a total weight allowance for your trip, and you can distribute the weight across as many bags as you like.
However, there are still limits placed on each bag. Each bag can be no larger than 62 linear inches (158 centimeters) or weigh more than 70 pounds (32 kilograms). This weight limit applies to all cabin classes, including Economy.
Oversized and overweight checked bags are not allowed. However, oversized special items such as sports equipment are allowed.
Extra baggage fees for these travel regions are calculated by weight, instead of by bag. Specifically, they are calculated per 2.2 pounds (1 kilogram) but can only be bought in 11.02-pound (5 kilogram) allotments. For example, if you want to buy 17 kilograms of extra baggage, you will need to buy a 20-kilogram allocation (5 kilograms x 4).
Each paying passenger can travel with up to 220 pounds (100 kilograms) of checked baggage. Extra baggage can’t be bought for lap infants.
All fees are given in U.S. dollars, except for itineraries originating from Qatar. These fees are in Qatari riyals (QR). At the time of writing 1 U.S. dollar = 3.64 Qatari riyals.

Tips for Avoiding Extra Baggage Fees
Paying extra baggage fees can add up quickly, especially if you’re traveling with multiple bags or oversized items. Here are some tips to help you avoid extra baggage fees on Qatar Airways flights:
Pack Light
The best way to avoid extra baggage fees is to pack light and only bring what you need. Consider using packing cubes or compression bags to maximize space and keep your belongings organized.
Weigh Your Bags
Invest in a luggage scale so you can weigh your bags before you leave for the airport. This will help you avoid surprises at check-in and allow you to redistribute items between bags if necessary.
Upgrade Your Fare
Depending on your fare type, you may be entitled to a higher baggage allowance. Upgrading your fare can be more cost-effective than paying extra baggage charges.
Join Qatar Airways Privilege Club
If you’re a frequent traveler with Qatar Airways, consider joining their loyalty program, Privilege Club. Members of the program are eligible for extra baggage allowances and other perks.
Qatar Airways is a member of the oneworld airline alliance. If you have oneworld status, you will also receive a baggage benefit when flying with Qatar Airways.
Privilege Club Tier | Americas/Africa Baggage Benefit | Rest of World Baggage Benefit |
---|---|---|
Burgundy | None | None |
Silver (oneworld Ruby) | 1 extra checked bag | 33 lb (15 kg) extra checked baggage |
Gold (oneworld Sapphire) | 1 extra checked bag | 44 lb (20 kg) extra checked baggage |
Platinum (oneworld Emerald) | 2 extra checked bags | 55 lb (25 kg) extra checked baggage |
Ship Your Luggage
If you’re traveling with oversized or bulky items, it may be more cost-effective to ship them to your destination rather than paying extra baggage fees. Services like FedEx and UPS offer affordable shipping options for luggage. Qatar Airways also offers its own cargo service.
Final Thoughts
As we mentioned in our analysis of Qatar Airways baggage policy, although their checked baggage allowance is one of the most generous available, their extra baggage fees are prohibitive.
If you’re flying to or from the U.S., each extra bag, weighing up to 50 pounds, is $200 each, which is comparative to extra bag charges from U.S. legacy carriers.
However, if you’re flying on an itinerary that uses the weight concept to determine baggage allowance, the fees are much greater. For example, if you are flying from Europe to Australia, the fee for an extra bag is as follows:
- $45 (per 1 kg / 2.2 lb) x 23 (for a bag weighing up to 5 lb / 23 kg) = $1,035
- If bought at the airport, the same bag would cost $60 x 23 = $1,380.
As you can see, the fees are excessive. In a scenario such as this, it might be more cost effective to upgrade your ticket.
Remember to always check Qatar Airways’ website or contact their customer service for the latest information on baggage allowances and fees.

I want to bring one more bag of 20kg from Manila airport to norway. What is the total Coast.
Thank you
Hi Jonathan
Thank you for your comment.
Qatar’s fees for this itinerary is USD15/kg (prepaid bulk rate), so your 20kg bag will cost $300. If you buy your excess baggage at the airport, you’ll be charged $800 (USD$40/kg).
I hope that helps 🙂
Cheers
