What Is a Baggage Embargo?
A baggage embargo is a restriction imposed by airlines on luggage to specific destinations. They limit how much checked baggage you can bring with you on your trip. Also, there may be restrictions on oversize or overweight bags.
Certain baggage embargoes are in effect all year while others are only applied seasonally. Seasonal embargoes are typically enforced during holiday travel periods.
Typical Baggage Embargo Restrictions
United may restrict your checked baggage in a variety of ways. You may be limited by:
- The number of checked bags
- The number of extra checked bags
- The size of your checked baggage
- Whether you can travel with oversized or overweight bags
United will accept one box instead of one bag when embargoes are in effect. Unless noted otherwise, boxes can be up to 62 linear inches (158 centimeters) in size and up to 50 pounds (23 kilograms) in weight.
United also limits the transport of sports equipment when a baggage embargo is in effect. The following types of sports equipment are not accepted for check-in:

Final Thoughts
The baggage embargoes in effect for Africa, Australia, and New Zealand are straightforward, as they are enforced for the entire year.
However, if you plan to travel anywhere south of the border, you need to be aware of any baggage embargoes which may be in place. Mexico has many destinations subject to baggage embargoes.
There are three seasonal baggage embargo periods:
- March 23 to April 4
- June 1 to August 31
- November 19 to January 15
Unfortunately, United does not apply baggage embargoes consistently for each destination.
If you will be checking in a box, take note that the Caribbean, Central America, and Mexico applies a smaller size restriction. Boxes can be no larger than 42 linear inches (107 centimeters) in size.
It’s particularly important to read each email from United up to your flight departure, as baggage embargoes can change with little notice.
