Checked Baggage Policy
Checked Baggage Size Limit
Each checked bag can weigh up to 62 linear inches (158 centimeters) in size. You calculate your bag’s size by measuring its outside length, width, and height, then add these measurements together. Be sure to include any protruding wheels, handles, or pockets with your measurements.
For itineraries using the piece concept (U.S. and Canada), Singapore Airlines will accept oversized checked bags up to 79 x 31 x 30 inches (200 x 80 x 75 centimeters) in size. Your bag will be subject to oversized baggage fees.
However, for itineraries using the weight concept, Singapore Airlines doesn’t allow checked baggage over 62 linear inches. Special baggage such as mobility items, sports equipment, and musical instruments are notable exceptions. An oversized baggage fee may apply, depending on the type of equipment.
Checked Baggage Weight Limit
Piece Concept
For flights to or from the U.S. and Canada, the weight limit of your checked baggage depends on your cabin class:
- Economy/ Premium Economy: 50 pounds (23 kilograms)

Weight Concept
For itineraries using the weight concept, each checked bag can weigh up to 70 pounds (32 kilograms) for all cabin classes.
Checked Baggage Allowances
Depending on your itinerary, your checked baggage allowance will be expressed by:
- Number of bags (piece system) or
- Total baggage weight, irrespective of number of bags (weight system).

Baggage Fees
If you wish to buy extra bags, or your baggage is oversized and/or overweight, you will have to pay a fee. All fees are in U.S. dollars.
More than one fee can apply per bag. For example, if you buy and extra bag which is both oversized and overweight, all bag fees will apply:
Bag fee + oversized fee + overweight fee
Prepaying Baggage Fees
You can prepay your baggage fees, including oversized and overweight bag fees, by accessing your booking on Singapore Airlines’ website.
It’s strongly recommended that you prepay your baggage fees if you can, as you can save some cash by doing so:
- Baggage fees paid at least 48 hours before your flight’s scheduled departure are eligible for a discount of up to 25% of the airport rate.
- Baggage fees paid between 6 and 24 hours before your flight are eligible for a 10% discount compared to the airport charge.
- Baggage fees paid within 6 hours of your flight aren’t eligible for a discount.
Important: If you used a travel agent to buy your Singapore Airlines ticket, you may not be able to log in to your booking on the airline’s website.
In that case, you would need to contact the travel agent that you purchased your ticket from. However, it’s not guaranteed that you’ll be able to benefit from Singapore Airlines’ discounted prepaid bag rates (Yet another reason why you should always buy your ticket directly from the airline).

Singapore Airlines’ baggage fees are based on a destination’s region. We will make reference to these regions in the baggage fee tables below.

Cabin Class | Size Limit | Weight Limit |
---|---|---|

Overweight Baggage Fees
For non-U.S. and non-Canadian flights, the weight concept is used for baggage allowances.
When this baggage allowance system is in use, overweight baggage fees are charged per kilogram but are purchased in 5-kilogram blocks. For example, if your checked baggage is overweight by 12 kilograms, you would need to pay for 15 kilograms (5 kg x 3).
Under the weight concept, each passenger can check-in up to 220 pounds (100 kilograms) of checked baggage. However, no single bag can weigh more than 70 pounds (32 kilograms). You’re free to distribute your weight allowance across as many bags as you like.
Caution: Overweight baggage fees, when the weight concept is in use, are prohibitively expensive. Especially when compared with baggage fees using the piece concept (flights to/from the U.S or Canada.

Final Thoughts
I hope this post has helped you prepare for your next Singapore Airlines trip.
This airline has one of the most generous baggage allowances in the business.
Economy Class passengers are entitled to 1 carry-on bag and 1 personal item. If you’re traveling in a premium cabin, you can bring 1 additional carry-on bag.
If you’re traveling to or from U.S. or Canada, all cabin classes can check in 2 bags for free.
Excess baggage fees are very expensive, but this is standard with all airlines.
Remember to always check Singapore Airlines’ website or contact their customer service for the latest information on baggage allowances and fees.
