Philippine Airlines (PAL) is the flag carrier of the Philippines and one of the oldest airlines in Asia. It operates flights to over 50 destinations across the globe, including several major cities in the United States and Canada. If you’re planning to travel with PAL from North America, it’s important to understand the airline’s baggage policy to avoid any surprises or extra charges.
This post will provide you with a detailed overview of PAL’s baggage policy to best prepare you for your next international trip with this airline. We will cover carry-on and checked baggage allowances, oversized, overweight, and extra bag fees.
Carry On Baggage Allowance
You’re allowed to bring one piece of carry-on baggage, as well as two personal items.
Carry On Bag
You’re allowed to bring a carry-on bag on board with you. The carry-on bag can be up to 22 x 14 x 9 inches (56 x 36 x 23 cm) in size. The bag can weigh no more than 15 pounds (7 kg).
Your carry-on bag should be stowed in the overhead bins or under the seat in front of you.
Personal Items
Philippine Airlines’ personal item allowance differs to most other airlines. You are allowed to bring any 2 items from the following list:
- Small handbag
- Purse
- Laptop bag
- Reading material
- Duty-free bag
- Coat
- Blanket
- Baby food for use during the flight
- Binoculars
- Small camera
- Assistive device such as walking stick or crutches
Your personal items should be stored under the seat in front of you.
Checked Baggage Allowance
Your checked baggage allowance depends on your cabin class and flight route.
Checked Bag Size Limit
Each checked bag can be up to 62 linear inches (158 centimeters) in size. This is calculated by measuring the outside length, width, and height, then adding these measurements together. You need to include any protruding wheels, handles, or straps in your measurements.
If your checked bag is larger than 62 linear inches, it will be subject to oversized bag fees. Philippine Airlines doesn’t stipulate an absolute maximum size for its checked baggage. However, the airline advises in its Baggage Rules document that you should contact them if you intend on traveling with oversized baggage.
Checked Bag Weight Limit
Philippine Airlines won’t accept checked bags that weigh more than 70 pounds (32 kilograms).
Piece Concept
If you are flying to or from the U.S., Canada, Japan, or the Middle East, your checked baggage allowance follows the piece concept. What this means is that your baggage allowance is determined by the number of bags. This is the same baggage concept that’s used within the U.S.
All cabin classes include 2 free bags. The weight allowance for each bag varies, based on the cabin class:
Cabin Class | Weight Allowance |
---|---|
Economy | 2 x 50 pounds (23 kg) |
Premium Economy | 2 x 55 pounds (25 kg) |
Business | 2 x 70 pounds (32 kg) |
It’s important to note that not all flight routes offer a Premium Economy class.
Weight Concept
For all other flight routes, your checked baggage allowance is based on the weight concept. You are allocated a total weight allowance that you’re free to distribute across as many bags as you like.

Excess Baggage
In this section, we will explain what baggage fees to expect if your checked bags are oversized and/or overweight. Also, if you plan to travel with more than 2 checked bags, we’ll detail the charges for extra bags.
Oversized and Overweight Baggage
Oversized Checked Baggage
As stated earlier, checked bags can be up to 62 linear inches in size. If they exceed this, your bags will be subject to oversized bag fees.
Philippine Airlines has two oversized baggage tiers:
- 63 to 80 inches
- 81 inches or more
Overweight Checked Baggage
If your bag weighs more than 50 pounds, they will be subject to overweight bag fees. Oversized checked bags can’t weigh more than 70 pounds (32 kilograms).
The rest of this section will detail the oversized and overweight fees for each flight route.
