Silver Airways is a regional airline based in the United States, operating flights to over 20 destinations in Florida, the Caribbean, and South America. Whenever flying with an airline, it’s always a good idea to familiarize yourself with their baggage policy, to avoid any surprises or extra fees at the airport.
In this post, we’ll cover everything you need to know about Silver Airways’ baggage policy, including carry-on and checked baggage allowances and fees. We’ll also cover the special baggage allowances for military personnel. If you’re planning to travel with special items such as sports equipment or musical instruments, we’ll explain what you need to be aware of.
Carry-On Baggage Allowance
Silver Airways allows passengers to bring one carry-on bag and one personal item onboard the plane.
There are no weight restrictions for carry-on baggage on Silver Airways flights, but you should be able to lift your bag and store it in the overhead bin without assistance.
If your flight is on one of Silver Airway’s SAAB planes, your checked bag will be valet checked, as these planes don’t have overhead bins.
Carry On Bag
Your carry-on bag can’t be any larger than 22 x 14 x 9 inches (55 x 35 x 22 centimeters). These measurements must include any wheels, handles, or straps.
Typical carry-on bags include:
- Small suitcase
- Duffel bag
- Backpack
Your carry-on bag must be able to fit in the overhead bin or under the seat in front of you.
Personal Item
Your personal item can be up to 17 x 10 x 8 inches (43 x 25 x 20 centimeters).
Typical personal items include:
- A purse
- Briefcase
- Laptop bag
- Small backpack
Your personal item must be able to fit under the seat in front of you.
Checked Baggage Allowance
In this section, we’ll explain how many bags you can check in. We’ll also discuss how large and heavy each bag can be.
Number of Checked Bags
You can prepurchase up to 2 checked bags online. However, Silver Airways enforces a seasonal embargo which limits the number of checked bags to/from Puerto Rico. We will discuss this in detail later in the article.
The airline allows you to pay for more checked bags at check-in, but they are accepted on a standby basis. What this means is that the airline can’t guarantee that the extra checked bags beyond your first two will travel on your flight. If there is insufficient space in the plane’s hold, your extra bags will be transported on the next available flight. Silver Airways will let you know when your luggage arrives at the destination airport. It’s your responsibility to collect them from the airport.
The airline has an absolute limit of 10 checked bags per passenger.
Checked Bag Size Limit
Checked bags can be up to 62 linear inches (157 centimeters) in size. This is calculated by measuring the outside length, width, and height of your bag, and adding these measurements together. Be sure to include any protruding wheels, handles, or straps in your measurements.
If your checked bag is larger than 62 linear inches, it will be considered oversized and subject to an oversized bag fee. Silver Airways won’t accept checked bags larger than 115 linear inches (292 centimeters).
Checked Bag Weight Limit
Your checked bag can weigh up to 50 pounds (23 kilograms). If your bag weighs more than 50 pounds, it will be subject to an overweight fee. Silver Airways won’t accept checked bags weighing more than 100 pounds (45 kilograms).
Checked Baggage Fees
Silver Airways charges a fee for each checked bag, with the amount depending on the itinerary and whether the bag is pre-purchased or bought at the airport. It’s important to note that baggage fees are non-refundable.
If you buy your checked bags in advance online, you can save $5 compared to purchasing them at the airport. The prices for checked bags vary depending on the route, but as an example, for domestic flights, the cost for one checked bag when purchased online is $30, and for a second checked bag, the cost is $40. If you wait until you get to the airport to purchase your bags, for domestic flights, the cost for one checked bag at the airport is $35, and for a second checked bag, the cost is $45.

Excess Baggage Fees
All excess baggage fees can only be paid at the airport. The fees can’t be prepaid online.
Extra Bag Fees
If you want to travel with more than 2 checked bags, there are a few things to consider:
- Extra bags can only be bought at the airport. You can’t prepurchase them.
- There is a chance that Silver Airways will not accept extra bags for check-in, due to insufficient cargo space in the plane’s hold. We recommend that you contact the airline to confirm whether your checked baggage will be accepted for your specific flight.
- Silver Airways may accept extra checked bags on a standby basis. The airline won’t guarantee that the extra bags will be on your flight. Instead, they may be transported on the next available flight. Silver Airways will contact you when they arrive, for you to collect them at the airport.
- The absolute maximum number of bags that you can check is 10.
The fee for checked bags beyond the first two is $100 each.
Oversized Bag Fees
If your checked bag is larger than 62 linear inches (157 centimeters), Silver Airways will apply an overweight bag fee. This fee is on top of any other baggage fees:
- 62 to 115 linear inches: +$100
The airline won’t accept checked bags that are larger than 115 linear inches. Also, each bag can be no longer than 84 inches in length.
Overweight Bag Fees
If your checked bag weighs more than 50 pounds (23 kilograms), the airline will apply an overweight bag fee. This fee is in addition to any other applicable bag fees:
- 51 to 70 pounds: +$50
- 71 to 100 pounds: +$100
Silver Airways won’t accept checked bags weighing more than 100 pounds.
Military Baggage Allowance
Active-duty military personnel traveling on orders are entitled to 2 free checked bags. Each of these free bags can be up to 62 linear inches in size and 70 pounds in weight. If the checked bags are beyond these limits or extra bags are purchased, excess baggage fees will apply.
Unlike many other U.S. carriers, this free allowance doesn’t extend to a military passenger’s spouse or dependent.
Special Baggage
Silver Airways accepts special items such as sports equipment and musical instruments for checked baggage.
The size and weight of each special item is measured when it is packed inside its protective case.
Sports Equipment
Silver Airways accepts sports equipment as checked baggage. With regards to fees, the airline treats sporting items as standard checked baggage. However, the airline won’t accept items longer than 84 inches in length.
Bicycles
Silver Airways requires that bikes either have pedals removed and handlebars turned to the side, or the handlebars and pedals protected by padding.
Bicycles must be packed in a cardboard box or a bicycle bag for travel.
Other Sports Equipment
Silver Airways may apply a special sports equipment charge instead of a standard bag fee, for items including:
- Fishing equipment
- Scuba gear
- Surfboards
The airline will assess the type of fee applicable to your specific equipment at check-in.
Musical Instruments
Silver Airways accepts musical instruments up to 150 linear inches (381 centimeters) in size and weighing no more than 165 pounds (75 kilograms).
With respect to fees, standard and excess baggage charges apply.
The airline considers musical instruments as fragile items. The airline won’t accept liability for any damage that occurs to the instrument during transit.
Baggage Embargo
Silver Airways has a seasonal baggage embargo for all flights to and from Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport (SJU), Puerto Rico.
The embargo is in effect from October 24, 2022, to March 31, 2023. During this period, you can check only one bag on your flight. Silver Airways may accept more bags on a standby basis. The extra bags will be transported on the next available flight. Your carry-on baggage allowance is unaffected.
At the Airport
Each of your bags must have your name clearly on them.
Your baggage must be checked by the following deadlines, depending on the type of flight:
- Domestic flights: 45 minutes before your flight
- International flights: 60 minutes before your flight
However, we recommend that you arrive at the airport at least 2 hours before for domestic flights, and 3 hours for international flights, to give yourself plenty of time to get through security.
Arriving early at the airport is especially important if you plan to check more than 2 bags. Extra bags are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis.
Final Thoughts
Silver Airways baggage policy is typical of the airline industry. You can bring a personal item and carry-on bag onboard at no charge. The baggage fees are standard as well: within the U.S., your first bag will cost $30, while the second is charged $40. However, as you’re probably only flying within the state of Florida, whether this represents good value is up for debate. You can save $5 on checked bag fees by paying for them before you arrive at the airport.
The only thing you need to watch out for is the seasonal baggage embargo between October and March of each year. When it’s in effect, you’re limited to only one checked bag.
Remember to always check Silver Airways’ website or contact their customer service for the latest information on baggage allowances and fees.
