If you’re planning to fly with LATAM Airlines, you might be wondering about their baggage policy.

How much can you bring on board? How much can you check in? How much will you pay for excess baggage?

In this post, we will answer these questions and more, so you can prepare for your trip with confidence and avoid any unexpected issues or fees when you check in at the airport.

Carry On Baggage Policy

Carry On Baggage Allowance

Every fare from LATAM Airlines includes one personal item. Additionally, all tickets, with the exception of Basic, also include one carry-on bag.

Carry On Baggage Allowance

If you bought a Basic fare and want to add a carry-on bag, you can do so by accessing your booking on LATAM’s website.

Personal Item

All fares include one personal item.

Personal Item Size Limit

Your personal item can be up to 17.8 x 13.8 x 7.9 inches (45 x 35 x 20 centimeters) in size.

It must be able to fit under the seat in front of you.

Examples of typical personal items include:

  • Handbag
  • Laptop bag
  • Small backpack
  • Briefcase

If your personal item exceeds the above size limit, you may have to check the item into the plane’s hold. You will also have to pay a baggage fee.

Personal Item Weight Limit

Latam Airlines doesn’t have weight limits for personal items.

Hot Tip: If you’re also traveling with a carry-on bag, pack your heaviest items in your personal items. As you’ll soon see, carry-on bags have weight limits.

Not only will you be able to bring more weight on board, but your carry-on bag will also be lighter to lift when you place it in the overhead bin.

Carry On Bag

All LATAM fares, except for Basic, include one carry-on bag.

Carry On Bag Weight Limit

Your carry-on bag can be up to 21.7 x 13.8 x 9.8 inches (55 x 35 x 25 centimeters) in size. It must be able to fit in the overhead bin or under the seat in front of you.

Hot Tip: If the overhead bins are full, you may have to check your bag to the plane’s hold.

To prepare for such an event, pack all your important documents, valuables, fragile items, and medications in your personal item. By doing this, you can avoid having to frantically repack your carry-on items before handing your bag over.

Examples of typical carry-on bags include:

  • Small suitcase
  • Backpack
  • Duffel bag
  • Garment bag

If your carry-on bag exceeds the above size limit, you may have to check the bag into the plane’s hold. You will also have to pay a baggage fee.

Carry On Bag Weight Limit

The weight limit of your carry-on bag depends on which cabin class you’re traveling in.

If you’re traveling in Economy Class, your carry-on bag can weigh up to 22 pounds (10 kilograms).

If you’re traveling in Premium Economy or Premium Business, your carry-on bag can weigh up to 35 pounds (16 kilograms).

Cabin ClassWeight Limit
Economy22 lb (10 kg)
Premium Economy35 lb (16 kg)
Premium Business35 lb (16 kg)

You should be able to lift your carry-on bag in the overhead bin without needing help.

Carry On Bag Fees

If you’re traveling on a Basic fare and want to travel with a carry-on bag, you’ll have to pay a fee.

You can add a carry-on bag up to 6 hours before your flight’s scheduled departure by accessing your booking on LATAM Airlines’ website.

The fee that you’ll have to pay for a carry-on bag depends on the following factors:

  • Type of travel:
    • Domestic
    • International
  • How long before your flight you pay for your carry-on bag:
    • More than 48 hours
    • Between 6 and 48 hours
    • Between 1 and 6 hours
    • At the gate

Prepaying your carry-on bag fee can save you up to 40% compared to paying at the airport.

The following tables show how much you’ll have to pay for your carry-on bag. The tables are organized by type of travel (domestic or international).

For domestic flights from Brazil, all fares include a carry-on bag for free.

Checked Baggage Policy

Checked Bag Size Limit

How to measure your baggage
How to Measure Your Baggage

Your checked bag can be up to 62.2 linear inches (158 centimeters) in size. To determine the size of your bag, measure its outside length, width, and height, then add these measurements together. Make sure that you include all protruding wheels, handles, and straps with your measurements.

If your bag is larger than 62.2 linear inches, you’ll have to pay an oversized baggage fee when you drop off your bag at the airport.

LATAM Airlines doesn’t accept checked baggage larger than 118.1 linear inches (300 centimeters).

Checked Bag Weight Limit

Each checked bag can weigh up to 51 pounds (23 kilograms). If your bag exceeds this weight, you’ll have to pay an overweight baggage fee when you drop off your bag at the airport.

LATAM Airlines doesn’t accept checked bags that weigh more than 99.2 pounds (45 kilograms).

However, the following destinations have a more restrictive weight limit of 70.5 pounds (32 kilograms):

  • Argentina
  • Aruba
  • Europe
  • Oceania

These weight limits apply for flights to and from these destinations.

Checked Baggage Allowance

The number of bags that you can check in for no additional charge depends on the cabin class that you’re traveling in and the type of fare purchased.

The size and weight limits for checked baggage is the same for all types of fares:

  • Size limit: 62.2 linear inches
  • Weight limit: 51 pounds

Baggage Fees

In this section, we’ll explain how much you’ll have to pay for extra checked bags as well as oversized or overweight baggage.

Extra Baggage Fees

If you want to buy additional checked bags on top of what was included with your ticket, you’ll have to pay a fee.

The fee that you’ll have to pay for a checked bag depends on the following factors:

  • Type of travel:
    • Domestic
    • International
  • How long before your flight you pay for your carry-on bag:
    • More than 48 hours
    • Between 6 and 48 hours
    • Between 1 and 6 hours

Prepaying your checked bag fee can save you up to 40% compared to paying at the airport.

Each passenger can check in up to 10 pieces of baggage. However, there is one exception to this limit. There is currently a baggage embargo for flights between the U.S. and Ecuador. For these flights, Economy class passengers are limited to 2 checked bags, while Premium cabin class travelers can check up to 3 bags.

Domestic Travel within South America

If you’re traveling domestically on LATAM within South America countries, you can buy 1 checked bag weighing up to 33 pounds (15 kilograms) instead of the standard 51 pounds (23 kilograms). The checked bag size limit remains the same, at 62.2 linear inches.

The 33-pound checked bag can only be purchased online and is available up to 6 hours before your flight’s scheduled departure.

The following tables show how much you’ll expect to pay for extra checked bags, based on your originating country.

Oversized and Overweight Baggage Fees

If your checked bag is oversized and overweight, both fees will apply.

Oversized and overweight baggage fees can only be paid at the airport check-in counter.

Oversized Baggage Fees

If your checked bag is between 62.2 and 118.1 linear inches (158 to 300 centimeters), it’s considered oversized and subject to an additional fee.

LATAM Airlines doesn’t accept checked bags larger than 118.1 linear inches.

Overweight Baggage Fees

If your checked bag is between 51 and 99.2 pounds (23 to 45 kilograms), it’s considered overweight and subject to an additional fee.

LATAM Airlines has two weight ranges for overweight baggage:

  • 51 to 70.5 pounds (23 to 32 kilograms)
  • 70.5 to 99.2 pounds (32 to 45 kilograms)

As you would expect, the higher weight range has a correspondingly higher fee.

Certain destinations have a maximum weight limit of only 70.5 pounds (32 kilograms). The affected destinations are as follows:

  • Argentina
  • Aruba
  • Europe
  • Oceania

The maximum weight limit applies to flights to and from these destinations.

Domestic Flights

All excess baggage fees are in U.S. dollars unless otherwise indicated:

  • BRL: Brazil Real
  • CLP: Chile Peso
  • COP: Colombia Peso

Colombia has seasonal pricing (low and high season). Frustratingly, LATAM doesn’t have specific dates when high season fees apply. Instead, it provides general guidelines on when you can expect to pay higher fees:

  • End-of-year holiday season
  • National holidays
  • Long weekends
  • Summer season
  • Winter season

How to Avoid or Reduce Baggage Fees

If you want to save money on your baggage fees, here are some tips that you can follow:

  • Choose a fare type that includes free checked baggage, such as Plus or Top fare.
  • Join the airline’s LATAM Pass loyalty program and earn miles every time you fly with LATAM Airlines or partner airlines. You can use your miles to redeem free flights, upgrades, or excess baggage. You can also enjoy additional free checked baggage depending on your membership level.
  • Pack light and use a scale to weigh your bags before you go to the airport. This way, you can avoid paying extra fees for overweight or oversized bags.
  • If you have to bring more baggage than allowed, pay for it online in advance. You can save up to 40% on excess baggage fees if you pay online at least 48 hours before your flight.

Final Thoughts

LATAM Airlines is a great option for traveling to and from Latin America, but you should be aware of their baggage policies and fees.

All fares except Basic include 1 personal item and 1 carry-on bag. However, if you buy a Basic fare, you can add a carry-on bag as a separate purchase.

LATAM has a wide selection of fare types to suit all checked baggage needs. Generally, it’s cheaper to buy an Economy ticket that includes checked baggage rather than pay for your bags separately.

If you do buy extra bags beyond your included baggage allowance, paying for them at least 48 hours before your flight’s scheduled departure can save you up to 40% off the airport fee.

Remember to always check LATAM Airlines’ website or contact their customer service for the latest information on baggage allowances and fees.
