If you’re planning a trip to Iceland or Europe, Icelandair may be one of your top choices. Known for its excellent service and affordable fares, Icelandair is a popular airline that offers a generous baggage policy to its passengers.

In this post, we’ll explore Icelandair’s baggage policy in detail, including its carry-on and checked baggage allowances. We’ll also cover baggage fees when you want to bring more baggage than what is included with your ticket. If you’re a sports enthusiast or a musician, we also explain Icelandair’s policies when traveling with these types of items.

Carry On Baggage Allowance

Icelandair allows you to bring one carry-on bag and one personal item on board.

However, if you are flying on a Saga Premium Flex ticket, you can travel with up to 2 carry-on bags.

Carry On Baggage Allowance

Carry On Bag Size and Weight Limit

Carry On Bag Size Limit

The carry-on bag can’t be any larger than 22 x 16 x 8 inches (55 x 40 x 20 centimeters). You need to include the bag’s wheels and handles, and any protrusions in your measurements. The carry-on bag must be able to fit in the overhead bins.

If your carry-on bag is larger than this size limit, it will have to be checked and you’ll be charged an extra bag fee.

Carry On Bag Weight Limit

The weight limit for the carry-on bag is 22 pounds (10 kilograms).

If your carry-on bag weighs more than 22 pounds, it will have to be checked and you will be charged an extra bag fee.

Personal Item Size Limit

Personal Item Size Limit

The personal item can be a purse, briefcase, or laptop bag, and its maximum dimensions should not exceed 16 x 12 x 6 inches (40 x 30 x 15 centimeters). Your personal item should be able to fit under the seat in front of you.

Personal Item Weight Limit

Icelandair does not enforce a weight limit for your personal item.

Checked Baggage Policy

Now, let’s take a look at Icelandair’s checked baggage allowance.

Icelandair’s checked baggage allowance varies depending on your ticket type and destination.

Checked Baggage Allowance

Checked Baggage Size Limit

How to measure a suitcase

Your checked bag can be up to 62 linear inches (158 centimeters) in size. This is calculated by measuring the outside length, width, and height of your bag. You then add these measurements together to obtain your bag’s linear size. You need to include your bag’s wheels, handles, straps, and any other protrusions on your bag in your measurements.

If your checked bag is larger than 62 linear inches, it will be what Icelandair calls “odd-sized” baggage and be subject to an extra baggage fee.

Checked Baggage Weight Limit

The weight of each of your checked bags depends on what cabin class you’ll be traveling in. For all Economy Class tickets, your checked bag can weigh up to 50 pounds (23 kilograms). If you are traveling on a Business Class (Saga Premium) ticket, each of your checked bags can weigh up to 70 pounds (32 kilograms) each.

Checked Baggage Allowance

The number of checked bags that is included in your fare depends on the type of ticket you purchased and which cabin class you’re traveling in.

Economy Class Baggage Allowance

If you’re flying on an Economy Light ticket, your fare doesn’t include any free checked baggage allowance.

For all other Economy Class tickets, you can check one bag weighing up to 23 pounds for free.

Business Class Baggage Allowance

If you’re traveling on a Saga Premium or Saga Premium Flex ticket, you can check up to two free bags weighing up to 32 pounds at no charge.

Baggage Fees

If you plan to travel with extra bags beyond the baggage allowance included with your fare, or your bags are oversized or overweight, Icelandair will charge you extra baggage fees.

Overweight Bag Fees

A checked bag is considered overweight if it is heavier than 50 pounds (23 kilograms) but not weighing more than 70 pounds (32 kilograms).

Icelandair will not accept checked bags weighing more than 70 pounds.

The overweight bag fee that you will be charged depends on your flight route. You can’t prepay for overweight bags. The airline will weigh your bags upon check-in and charge you any applicable fees.

Extra Bag Fees

Iceland allows you to travel with up to 10 checked bags in total. You can prepurchase up to 3 extra bags before check-in. If you need more checked baggage, you will have to pay for them at check-in. Unlike what you may have experienced when traveling with U.S. airlines, the extra bag fee does not increase with each extra bag. The fee is the same whether you’re paying for your 3rd bag or your 10th.

If you pay for the extra bags at least 4 hours before your flight’s scheduled departure, you’ll receive a 20% discount on the extra bag fee.

You can add more checked bags by visiting Icelandair’s website and entering your last name and reservation number.

Special Items

Icelandair allows you to bring special items onboard their flights. However, certain rules and restrictions apply depending on the type of item. Icelandair defines special items as any luggage that exceeds the standard size and weight limits or requires special handling. Examples of special items include sports equipment and musical instruments.

Sports Equipment

If you’re planning to bring sports equipment on your Icelandair flight, you’ll be glad to know that Icelandair accepts a wide range of equipment types, including skis, snowboards, bicycles, golf clubs, and fishing gear.

General Rules for Sports Equipment

Some sports equipment can be included as part of your free baggage allowance included with your fare. Other types of equipment can’t, such as bicycles. You will have to pay a mandatory fee to travel with these items.

Unless stated otherwise below, Icelandair won’t accept sports equipment that weighs more than 70 pounds (32 kilograms).

For all sports items, you can receive a 20% discount on your baggage fee if you pay for them at least 4 hours before your flight’s scheduled departure.

Now, let’s go explore the allowances, rules, and fees of typical sports equipment checked as baggage.

Bicycles

Allowance

You can check a non-motorized bicycle as checked baggage. It can be up to 87 x 40 x 22 inches (221 x 102 x 56 centimeters) in size. If your bike exceeds these dimensions, it will be subject to an oversized fee. Your bike can weigh up to 70 pounds (32 kilograms). Icelandair won’t accept bicycles that exceed this weight.

Rules

Your bike must be properly packed in a dedicated bag or box. The pedals must be removed, and tires deflated.

Fees

Icelandair charges a fee to check a bike. You can’t use one of the free bags included in your fare to check your bicycle. As only 25 bicycles are allowed on each flight, Icelandair recommends that you prepurchase your bike fees as soon as possible to reserve a place. Another benefit of paying for your bike before you reach the airport is that you receive a 20% discount on the fee.

Musical Instruments

Icelandair’s policy on musical instruments is relatively straightforward, but it’s important to understand the details to avoid any confusion or issues when traveling. According to Icelandair’s website, musical instruments are allowed as checked baggage or carry-on items, depending on their size and weight.

Icelandair strongly recommends that you pack your musical instrument in a hardside case.

Carry-On Instruments

If your musical instrument can fit in the overhead compartment or under the seat in front of you, it can be carried on the plane as a carry-on item. However, there are some size and weight restrictions to keep in mind. Icelandair’s carry-on baggage dimensions are 21.6 x 15.7 x 7.8 inches (55 x 40 x 20 centimeters), and the weight limit is 22 pounds (10 kilograms).

If your instrument exceeds these limits, you have two options available to you:

  1. You can buy a seat for your musical instrument. The instrument can be up to 59 x 14 x 20 inches (150 x 35 x 50 centimeters) in size.
  2. You can check your musical instrument as baggage.

Checked Instruments

If your musical instrument is too large to be carried on the plane, it can be checked as baggage. Icelandair’s baggage allowance depends on your fare type, but most economy fares include one checked bag weighing up to 50 pounds (23 kilograms). Musical instruments can count as your free checked baggage, but if it’s extra baggage, you will have to pay a fee:

Final Thoughts

Icelandair’s baggage policy is straightforward and generous compared to many other European airlines. All fares (except Economy Light) include at least one checked bag weighing up to 50 pounds. You are also allowed to bring one carry-on bag and one personal item on board the aircraft.

Remember to always check Icelandair’s website or contact their customer service for the latest information on baggage allowances and fees.
